302 Andy Turner

Position : Winger

Played : 2000-01  (on  loan  from  Rotherham)

Appearances : 4

Goals : 0

Andy  arrived  on  deadline  day  as  the  last  attempt  to  fill  the  left  wing  berth. He  had  a  decent  pedigree  having  started  out  at  Tottenham  where  he  was  on  the  fringe  of  the  first  team  for  four  years  interspersed  with  loan  spells  at  Wycombe, Doncaster, Huddersfield  and  Southend. He  was  also  the  Premiership's  youngest  goalscorer  for  nearly  5  years  from  September  1992  until  Michael  Owen  beat  his  record.  He  has  two  Irish  Under-21  caps. In  September  1996   he  moved  to  Portsmouth  for  £250,000  and  made  40  appearances  until  a  dislocated  ankle  halted  his  progress. Crystal  Palace  risked  £75,000  on  him  in  October  1998  but  he  only  made  one  substitute  appearance  for  them  and  none  at  all  on  loan  at  Wolves. In  the  summer  of  1999  he  moved  on  to  Rotherham  for  whom  he  managed  36  games  scoring  one  goal. He  had  been  on  loan  at  Boston  earlier  in  the  season.

Andy  looked  to  still  have  some  ability  but  not  much  appetite  for  tracking  back  and  you  knew  what  was  going  to  happen. I  don't  think  he  played  a  full  90  minutes  for  us  and  soon  lost  his  place, Parkin  preferring  a  square  peg  in  Michael  Oliver.

At  the  end  of  the  season  he  dropped  down  to  the  Conference  with  Yeovil  spending  a  year  there  with  loan  spells  at  Nuneaton  and  Kettering . He  then  had  a  spell  at  Tamworth  before  a  brief  League  comeback  with  Northampton  in  2003  consisting  of  3  substitute  appearances. He  had  short  spells  with  Northwich  and  Moor  Green  before  becoming  player-coach  of  Chasetown FC.

Andy  completes  the  2000-01  season.

301 Matthew Gilks

Position : Goalkeeper

Played : 2000-01  to  2006-07

Appearances : 166

Goals : 0

Given  that  Jonah  and  Flicker  had  spells  away  from  the  club  Matthew  is  the  first  player   we've  come  to  with  a  continuous  stint  that  went  into  the  Hillcroft  era. Matt  came  through  the  club's  YTS  scheme  and  got  his  first  team  chance in  March  2001 when  Neil  Edwards  got  sent  off , inevitably  just  days  after letting  Phil  Priestley  sign  for  Chester.

Matt  had  a  daunting  debut  away  at  leaders  Chesterfield  and , recalling  Steve  Bywater's  diastrous  debut  at  Carlisle , we  were  braced  for  calamity. It  didn't  happen. Matt  got  the  better  of  David  Reeves  in  a  one-on-one  situation  early  in  the  game  and  went  on  from  there  with  a  nerveless  display. He  was  all  at  sea  for  their  equaliser  from  a  corner  but  you  could  forgive  him  for  that.  Matt  got  his  next  chance  the  next  game  when  Edwards  got  injured  and  he  came  off  the  bench. He  also  played  in  the  game  after  that.

Matt  started  the  next  season  in  the  team  as  Edwards  struggled  with  injury  and  played  his  part  in  our  impressive  start  before  he  was  controversially  dropped  after  keeping  a  clean  sheet  at  Swansea, Parkin  saying  he  needed  a  rest. He  returned  for  the  FA  Cup  ties  suffering  a  nightmare  at  Blackpool  when  a  certain  Paul  Simpson  made  an  absolute  monkey  of  him , only  the  posts  saving  Matt   from  conceding  a  hat trick  of  long  range  lobs. He  finished  the  season  with  19  appearances  and  6  clean  sheets  to  his  name  not  having  let  anyone  down.

Matt  had  to  wait  until  October  for  his  first  game  under  Paul  Simpson  but  came  back  in  the  side  in  February  and  had  a  straight  run  to  the  end  of  the  season  though  he  had  to  go  off  with  concussion  at  York  in  April  2003. By  then  he  had  made  an  impression  as  an  agile  brave  keeper  with  one  big  Achilles  heel, his  kicking  which  never  really  improved. We  were  always  lucky  if  his  goalkicks  remained  in  play. He  was  a  bit  testy  about  it  and  once  turned  round  and  told  my  mate  Mark  to  f**k  off  after  one  heckle  too  many.

Edwards  was  still  out  injured  at  the  start  of  the  next  season  so  Matt  played  up  until  November   just  missing  the  disastrous  run  which  cost  Alan  Buckley  his  job. Edwards  kept  his  place  under  Steve  Parkin., Matt  only  appearing  again  in  the  final  game  at  Oxford.  The  following  season  he managed  to  elbow  the  increasingly  creaky  Edwards  aside  and  become  first  choice. Edwards  walked  out  at  the  end  of  the season  and  Matt  was  ever-present  in    2005-06 . He  didn't  appreciate  the  constructive  criticism  of  team-mate  Tony  Gallimore  which  may  have  been  a  factor  in  the  latter's  release.

Matt  was  also  ever-present  in  2006-07  when  the  new  dawn  began   and  certainly  contributed  to  the  upturn  in  our  fortunes  with  12  clean  sheets  (18  in  total  that  season).  Matt  knew  he  could  move  on  to  better  things  at  the  end  of  the  season  and  couldn't  be  persuaded  to  stay.

He  signed  for  Norwich  in  the  summer  but  after  a  year  of  sitting  on  the  bench  moved  on  to  Blackpool . After  playing  in  one  Carling  Cup  tie  he  rejoined  Paul  Simpson  on  loan  at  Shrewsbury  for  4  games  in  November  2008. He  got   a  5  game  run  in  Blackpool's  first  team  in  the  new  year  but  didn't  establish  himself  until  last  season  which  of  course  was  crowned  with  victory  in  the  play-offs  despite  conceding  6  goals  over  the  three  games.  Matt  is  now  a  Premiership  goalkeeper  with  three  clean  sheets  in  the  top  flight  and  a  call  up  to  the  Scotland  squad  to  his  credit  although  he  is  out  injured  at  the  time  of  writing.

300 Paul Connor

Position : Forward

Played : 2000-01  to  2003-04

Appearances : 95

Goals : 29

With  Paul  we  enter  the  home  strait,  that  is  players  who've  been  signed  within  the  decade  before  the  time  of  writing. Paul  was  (and  still  is)  our  record  signing,  from  Stoke  City  in  March  2001  for  £150,000. He  began  his  career  at  Middlesbrough  but  made  his  League  debut  on  loan  at  Hartlepool  in  February  after  an  earlier  loan  to  Gateshead  where  he  scored  2  on  his  debut. He  didn't  score  in  his  5  games  for  Hartlepool  but  got  off  the  mark  on  loan  at  Stoke  in  the  last  game  of  the  following  season. Stoke  signed  him  on  a  free  in  May  1999 . He  scored  5  in  28  appearances  (mainly  as  sub)  in  1999-2000  but  found  first  team  opportunities  limited  the  following  year  and  went  on  loan  to  Cambridge  in  November  2000  scoring  5  in  13  appearances. He  signed  for  us  immediately  afterwards.

Paul  came  when  we  were  at  a  low  ebb  after  an  horrendous  February  and  got  off  the  mark  in  his  second  game  with  a  scrappy  goal  in  our  draw  at  leaders  Chesterfield. Thereafter  he  proved  to  be  just  what  the  doctor  ordered,  ending  up  our  top  scorer  with  10  goals  in  14  games  including   a  hat  trick  in  our  6-0  hammering  of  Carlisle. Incidentally,  I  met  Carlisle's  Mark  Winstanley a  few  days  later  while  collecting  census  returns  and  he  was  quick  to  remind  me  that  he'd  been  on  the  bench. Ultimately  it  wasn't  quite  enough  to  take  us  into  the  play-offs  but  you  couldn't  blame  Paul.
He  was  quick  and  skilful  and  particularly  good  at  retreiving  the  ball  from  defenders  who  were  trying  to  shepherd  the  ball  over  the  by-line.

On  the  flip  side  of  the  coin  our  arrival  in  the  play-offs  the  following  season  owed  very  little  to  him. He  was  dogged  by  a  hamstring  injury all  season   scoring  just  one  goal , the  winner  at  Plymouth  in  August  and  had  to  stop  playing  altogether  in  January. He managed  to  make  a  substitute  appearance  in  the  second  leg  of  the  play-off  semi-final  against  Rushden  but  couldn't  alter  the  outcome.

He  was  fit  to  start  the  next  campaign  and  scored  the  winner  in  our  opening  game   at  home  to  Leyton  Orient  but  he  wasn't  quite  the  same  player  and  his  form  was  patchy. Some  of  his  pace  had  been  lost  and  defenders  found  it  easier  to  muscle  him  off  the  ball. He  scored  a  great goal  away  at  Swansea  and  was  a  key  player  in  our  FA  Cup  run  scoring  in  the  First  and  Second  Round  games  then  the  opening  goal  in  our  victory  over  Coventry. He  missed  the  Wolves  game  through  injury  but  returned  for  the  nervy  run-in  scoring  4  more  goals  in  games  which  all  ended  in  draws.

The  following  season  it  was  much  the  same  story  apart  from  picking  up  an  uncharacteristic  red  card  at  York. He  scored  his  last  goal  for  us  in  the win  over  Mansfield  in  February  2004.  Then, with  the  clock  ticking  on  his  contract  and  mindful  of  the  fact  that  our  other  six  figure  signing  Clive  Platt  had  left  the  club  for  nothing  the  previous  summer , the  Board/Parkin  decided  to  accept  Swansea's  deadline  day  offfer  of  £35,000. It  was  a  big  risk  given  our  perilous  position  at  the  time  but  Paul  wasn't  in  good  form  and  ultimately  it  worked  out. It  did  however  seem  like  the  door  was  clanging shut  on  the  post- Barrow  optimistic  era.  Some  supporters  regard  Paul  as  an  expensive  flop  but  I  think  he  was  unlucky.

Paul  did  OK  for  Swansea  scoring  16  goals  in  65  appearances  and  they  made  a  profit  when  they  sold  him  to  Leyton  Orient  for  £40,000  in  January  2006. Paul  spent  a  year  there  scoring  7  in  34  appearances  before  a  £25,000  move  to  Cheltenham. Paul  scored  the  same  number  of  goals  in  79  appearances  at  Whaddon  Road  and  he  was  released  in  the  summer  of  2009. He  had  a  season  at  Lincoln  but  failed  to  score  in  15  appearances  and  moved  down  to  Conference  football  in  the  summer  of  2010  when  he  signed  for  Mansfield. He  is  doing  well  there  with  11  goals  in  31  appearances  at  the  time  of  writing.

299 Kevin Townson

Position : Forward

Played : 2000-01  to  2004-05

Appearances : 102

Goals : 25

Kevin  was  picked  up  from  Everton's  YTS  in  the  summer  but  didn't  make  an  appearance  until  the  game  away  at  Southend  in  February, oddly  just  two  days  after  Parkin  had  told  a  Fans' Forum  he  wasn't  ready  for  the  first  team. Third-in-command  David  Hamilton  would  subsequently  claim  all  the  credit  for  his  signing.

Kevin  of  course  is   fondly  remembered  and  you  can  still  hear  the  odd  chorus  of  "Who  put  the  ball  in  the  Fulham  net ? "  at  games  but  there  is  a  question  mark over  whether  he  was  really  any  good  or  just  a  brief  flash  in  the  pan who  was  kept  on  too  long. It's  worth  noting  that  no less  than  62  of  Kevin's  appearances  were  as  a  substitute.

At  5'6"  and  just  over  10  stone  Kevin  was  never  going  to  be  a  physical  centre  forward ; he  was  a  penalty  box  nuisance  in  the  Paul  Dickov  mould. He  only  started  one  game  in  his  first  season,  away  at  Hartlepool  where  he  looked  lively  enough  but  the  subsequent  arrival  of  Paul  Connor  pushed  him  back  into  the  reserves.

His  heyday  was  the  following  season  where  he  finished   as  leading  scorer  with  14  goals  despite  again  being  mainly  a  substitute. He  scored  his  first  goal  at  home  to  Exeter  in  August  then  a  month  later  achieved  immortality  with  both  goals  in  our  2-2  draw  at  home  to  Premiership  Fulham  on 11th  September  2001  (why  does  that  date  stick  in  the  mind ? ).  He  also  put  his  penalty  away  in  the  shootout. On  the  back  of  that  he  got  a  call  up  to  the  England  under-19  squad  and  attention  from  Premiership  scouts.  Kevin  never  managed  a  hat-trick  but  got  3  more  braces  that  season  including  the  one  against  York at  home . That  contained  his  most  memorable  goal  where  he  ran  on  to  a  fabulous  defence-splitting  pass  from  Patrick  McCourt  and  slotted  home.

After  that  things  started  to  go  wrong. Kevin  suffered  more  than  most  from  the  mismanagement  of  Paul  Simpson  and  only  started  5  games  in  2002-03  scoring  just  once. There  was  a  suspicion  that  his  exploits  the  season  before   had  gone  to  his  head  but  more  seriously  now  that  his  teenage  energy  had  burned  itself  out  he  was  revealed  as  being  short  of  pace.

He  revived  the  following  year  under  Alan  Buckley  who'd  been  a  similar  type  of  forward  himself  and  knew  how  to  use  him. He  scored  7  up  to  Parkin's  return  finishing  as  leading  scorer  again  with  10. Parkin  however  was  suspicious  of  him, making  a  public  comment  about  him  slacking  off  in  a  game  as  soon  as  he'd  scored  and  Kevin  soon  found  himself  back  on the  bench. His  final  season  with  us was  a  complete  washout. He  was  dropped  after  the  first  home  game  and  never  played  for  us  again  seeing  out  the  season  with  loan  spells  at  Scarborough   and  Macclesfield.

Although  he  didn't  score  for  the  Silkmen  they  were  happy  enough  to  give  him  a  contract  for  the  next  season  but  he  disappointed  again  scoring  just  twice  in  18  mainly  substitute  appearances. Inevitably  one  of  them  was  against  us at  Spotland when  he  skinned  Jon Boardman (OK,  your  grand-dad  could  do that) and   duly  celebrated  in  front  of  Mr  Parkin. He  was  freed  at  the  end  of  the  season  almost  certainly  bringing  his  professional  career  to  an  end. He  moved  on  to  Northwich   but  it was  the  same  story,  just  2  goals  in  44  appearances (23  as  sub). In  2008  he  moved  into  the  League  of  Wales  with  New  Saints  but  didn't  settle  there  despite  scoring  5  in  just  7  games  and  signed  for  Droylsden in  July 2008. A  year  later  he  emigrated  to  Australia  and  played  for  Melbourne  Knights  where  he  won  the  Player  of  the  Year  in  the  Victorian  Soccer  League. Earlier  this  season  he  returned  to  England  and  signed  for  AFC  Fylde.

I  saw  Kevin  in  action  for  Fylde  at  Ramsbottom  a  few  months  back. His  hair  has  grown  out  a  bit  and  he  had  a  decent  game  although  he  didn't  stand  out  as  much  as  you  might  expect  and  missed  his  penalty  in  the  shootout. It's  hard  to  believe  he's  still  only  27.

298 Dean Howell

Position :  Winger

Played : 2000-01  (on  loan  from  Crewe)

Appearances : 3

Goals : 0

Dean  arrived  during  the  week  following  the  Shrewsbury  debacle  and  it's  fair  to  say  eyebrows  were  raised  at  the  idea  that  a  guy  with  just  one  game  apiece  for  Notts  County  and  Crewe  could  revitalise  our  fortunes.

Dean  made  his  debut  coming  on  as  sub  at  Southend  when  we  were  3-0  down  but  started  the  next  game  at  Hartlepool  in  the  problem  left  wing  position  and  did  well , putting  over   the  cross  for  Graham  Lancashire's  goal. Unfortunately  he  was  dreadful  in  his  home  debut  against  Kidderminster ; every  time  the  ball  came  over  to  him  it  seemed  to  take  him  by  surprise. He  was  eventually  subbed  and  didn't  get  another  chance.

Since  then  Dean  has  flitted  between   Conference  and   League  without  making  too  many  appearances  for  anyone. He  moved  on  to  Southport  in  2001  after  a  loan  spell  then  Morecambe  two  years  later. After  a  season  at  Christie  Park  he  signed  for  Halifax  in  2004. A  year  later  he  got  another  chance  in  League  football  with  Colchester  but  a  double  hernia  scuppered  his  ambitions  after  4 games  and  he  returned  to  Halifax. Injury  continued  to  plague  him  and  he  left  after  just  one  more  game  signing  for  Weymouth  in  2007. Seventeen  games  later  he  was  at  Grays  Athletic then  Rushden  &  Diamonds. In  2008  he  again  returned  to  the  Football  League  with  Aldershot  Town  but  couldn't  hold  down  a  regular  place  and  had  a  loan  spell  at  Bury playing  just  3  games. In  the  summer  of  2010  he  signed  for  Crawley  and  played  in  the  recent  FA  Cup  game  at  Old  Trafford. As  Crawley  are  doing  well  in  the  Blue  Square  Premier  he  could  return  yet  again  to  League  football.

Dean  also  had  a  spell  on  the  Z-list  celebrity  circuit  around  2007  when  he  shacked  up  with  Saskia  from  Big  Brother  6  (the  nasty  dark  haired  one  with  enormous  boobs)  and  appeared  in  a  Hello  magazine  spread.

297 Kevin Kyle

Position : Forward

Played : 2000-01  (on  loan  from  Sunderland)

Appearances : 6

Goals : 0

Kevin was the fourth and final borrowed striker , this time from Sunderland. The 19-year old had previously had loan spells at Huddersfield and Darlington where he scored his first League goal.

Kevin was an old- fashioned centre forward but was mainly deployed in a three–striker formation. He was certainly a good grafter but looked like he couldn’t hit a barn door when he got a chance.

His subsequent career suggests it may have been the way Parkin used him that was the problem. After returning to Sunderland he started getting more first team chances and a call up to the full Scotland side in 2002 ; to date he has 10 caps and one international goal. In 2003-04 he was Sunderland’s joint top scorer with 16 goals. He was then out of the game for nearly 18 months with a serious hip injury returning to action in 2006 when Sunderland were in the Premiership but doomed at the bottom. He managed to chalk up one goal before they went down. In the summer he moved to Coventry for £600,000 but wasn’t a success there managing just 5 goals in 44 appearances with the crowd on his back. In 2008 he went on loan to Wolves scoring once in 12 games although Kevin has subsequently admitted that Mick McCarthy wouldn’t sign him because of his gambling addiction. The following season he had a more successful loan spell at Hartlepool where he scored 5 in 15 appearances. Coventry released him in January 2009 and he signed for Kilmarnock where he was an instant success, singlehandedly keeping them in the SPL with crucial goals and winning a recall to the Scotland side. At the beginning of this season he followed manager Jim Jeffries to Hearts and is doing well with 7 goals in 19 appearances so far.

296 Christian Lee

Position :  Forward

Played : 2000-01  (on  loan  from  Gillingham)

Appearances : 5

Goals : 1

Christian was the third of the borrowed strikers and the only one of them to score. He started out at Doncaster but made his League debut for Northampton in 1995. After 8 goals in 59 appearances he moved to Gillingham for £35,000 in 1999 but went down to a knee injury after only 3 games and was then unable to get back into the side.

Christian was a big guy who looked to have all the attributes of a centre forward but his fitness was questionable. He scored with a header at home to Macclesfield in October in his second game coming on as sub. On the back of that and Tony Ellis’s mysterious withdrawal from the Exeter away game he got a couple of starts but didn’t make the most of them and Graham Lancashire’s return to fitness made him surplus to requirements.

After a barren loan spell at Leyton Orient he moved to Bristol Rovers on a short term deal where he scored twice in 9 appearances but wasn’t retained. He then moved to Farnborough Town enjoying a brief (one game) return to League football with Rushden and Diamonds on loan. After another season with Farnborough he signed for Halifax in 2003. He scored 6 in 25 games then had to retire with a back injury in 2005.

He was last heard of modelling lycra for Giordano.
