Kevin was a former squaddie signed from Burscough in March 1994 after our first target Gary Martindale opted for Bolton instead. He was signed as a winger but after a handful of substitute appearances he made his full debut filling in at left back in the penultimate game at Bury. He did so well that he stayed there as first choice for the rest of the Sutton-Docherty era.
As you might expect he was very good going forward which was particularly useful in 1994-95 when Mark Stuart was playing so poorly. He had to work a bit harder on his defending but generally tackled well and could play his way out of trouble. The only blemish was a petulant sending off at Torquay in 1995 which probably cost us the game.
Kevin's promising career at Dale ended disappointingly. After playing in the opening 3 games of 1996-97 Graham Barrow decided that he wasn't really a full back and "should be playing further forwards". Unfortunately there wasn't a slot for him and he didn't appear again until February 1997 when he was brought in as part of punishing Mark Stuart. As a winger Kevin was unimpressive and though he got a run of games up to April he made little impact. He was released in May.
Along with Dave Thompson and John Deary he went to Southport and scored the goal which took them to the FA Trophy Final in 1998 (the picture above is from Wembley that day). He played there for 3 seasons. His last known occupation was working for North West Water and he also plays competitive darts.
Kevin wraps up the 1993-94 season.
