Derek was the biggest of the summer signings at £10,000 from Hereford. His career began at Coventry making one First Division appearance in 1983 before going on loan to Torquay the following year. After scoring twice in 10 games they signed him permanently in August 1984. Derek only missed one game in 1984-5 scoring 4 goals but was still released and joined Swindon. He was a bit part player in their Fourth Division Championship side making 10 goallless appearances before moving on to Southend. He was a regular there for 3 seasons making at least 40 appearances in each one and scoring 15 goals but still got a free transfer in 1989 and moved north to Halifax. He had a good first season there scoring 4 in 41 appearances but only played 8 games the following season and moved on to Hereford. He made 103 appearances there scoring 18 goals before Dave Sutton became the first manager to pay money for him.
Derek had always looked a useful player against us (often scoring ) but it never quite worked out for him here. He made a decent start by scoring on his debut away at Gillingham but couldn't command a regular place in the side. He only made 9 appearances in his first season and didn't start a game once Mick Docherty had taken over. He wasn't an outright bad player and actually quite good at deadball situations but he just seemed too lightweight and short of pace. Docherty tried to pay him off over the summer of 1995 but the Board refused and so Derek moped around the fringes of the squad and played on loan at Altrincham for a month before injuries forced Docherty to draft him back into the side for the last dozen or so games. These are remembered for the "Derek Hall" song to the tune of "Wonderwall" started by the EGP lads. In truth there was a bit of irony going on as Derek's performances were no better than adequate but it made for a memorable celebration when he actually scored with a header away at Mansfield. Derek unwittingly provoked a regime change at the end of the season when Docherty raised the prospect of giving him another contract along with Ian Thompstone. This just seemed like a lazy decision by a distracted manager who didn't want to be bothered looking for better players and was cited by the Board as a major reason for his replacement with Graham Barrow.
Sent packing by the Board Derek moved into non-league football playing for Hyde, Stalybridge , Woodley Sports and Buxton before becoming player-coach at Curzon Ashton in 2000. He gave up playing in 2002 and emigrated to Australia and though he returned for a spell coaching at Curzon again in 2005 he is currently senior coach at Port Adelaide Lion Soccer Club.
