323 Gavin Melaugh
Position : Midfield
Played : 2002-03 (initially on loan from Aston Villa)
Appearances : 19
Goals : 1
Gavin also made his debut away at Oxford having played alongside Paddy McCourt and Lee McEvilly for Northern Ireland under-21s but not yet made his League debut.
Gavin was a midfield terrier of slight build but with a good appetite for work. He managed to get ahead of Michael Oliver in selection for the first team without being that much better if truth were told. Simpson gave him a contract to the end of the season and he had a golden month in February when he scored the winner against Oxford in the League, then a winner for Northern Ireland’s under-21s, then the equaliser against Wolves in the FA Cup when he deflected Paul Simpson’s hopeful shot into the bottom corner . That was his career highlight. Later in the season he lost his place and the Board left a decision on his future to the new manager.
Gavin didn’t wait around for that and returned to Ireland where he has played ever since, with Glentoran, Donegal Celtic, Ballymena and currently Lisburn Distillery.
