252 Ian Bryson
Position : Midfield
Played : 1997-98 to 1998-99
Appearances : 54
Goals : 1
Ian was another veteran , a 34-year old signed on a free from Preston. Ian's career began in Sotland with Hurlford United before signing for his hometown club Kilmarnock for whom he made 216 appearances scoring 41 goals. In 1988 he signed for Dave Bassett's Sheffield United for £40,000 , a great move as he featured in successive promotions and played for three seasons in the top flight. After 155 appearances and 36 goals he moved to Barnsley for £20,000 in the summer of 1993 but only stayed there till November when Preston bought him for £42,500. He was made captain of the side and scored a spectacular overhead kick in their playoff Final against Wycombe in 1994. The following season he played alongside a loanee called David Beckham for a few games. The year after that he led them to the Third Division title. He appeared in nearly every game in the Second but mainly as a substitute.
Ian began his first season with us injured and didn't appear until early October at home to Scunthorpe. In his first couple of games he was tremendous, the complete midfield man who could win tackles, weight a pass and get forward. He was the main man behind the 5-0 thrashing of Darlington. However he soon ran out of steam and Barrow compounded the problem by persistently playing him on the wing in preference to Mark Stuart. Ian had played there before in his career but just didn't have the legs for it anymore. After a two-month run in the side he was injured in the 6-1 FL Trophy defeat at Carlisle and didn't return until the end of March. He got injured in the warm-up away at Torquay early in April and missed the rest of the season. As he was signed on a two year deal Ian started the next season in the side and for a month or two he was again very good but age soon caught up with him. He scored a good goal to seal the win against Scarborough in the FA Cup when he managed to find the net from distance after their keeper had come up for a late corner. He had another six week injury break at the end of January then just went through the motions as the Barrow era wound to a close.
Ian played on for a while with Bamber Bridge and still plays in the Preston Veterans' League. He is now a match summariser for PA Sports.

251 Craig Smith
Position : Midfield ( also played upfront )
Played : 1997-98
Appearances : 3
Goals : 0
Craig was signed on loan from Derby in August as we had an injury crisis almost straightaway with all the codgers in the squad.
Craig proved that going up a couple of divisions for a loanee is no guarantee of quality. He made his League debut for us away at Leyton Orient as a substitute for Mark Carter who had been left alone up front after Mark Leonard dropped back to cover Keith Hill's sending-off. He did alright, winning a few headers and trying to hold the ball up. When he got a game in normal circumstances there was an immediate problem; he had a lack of mobility which made Paul Williams look like Thierry Henry. The game just went on around him.
Later in the season he went to Rushden and Diamonds in the Conference but only made two brief appearances there. Released in the summer he went to Burton Albion for three seasons. He was last heard of at Hinckley United in 2002.

250 Andy Scott
Position : Centre half (also played left back)
Played : 1997-98
Appearances : 3
Goals : 0
Like Alan Reeves before him Andy was actually playing in our reserves while still under contract to another club, in his case Cardiff City. An England Youth international he started out with Blackburn but made all his previous League appearances -16- for Cardiff.
He signed for a year in August 1997. He had looked quite useful in the reserves but after Mark Bailey we were wary of expecting too much. A tall rangy player, he made his debut as a sub in the first game at Notts County but thereafter stayed on the bench at best until his full debut at left back at home to Leyton Orient. Despite a decent performance by Andy we lost the game and he didn't get another chance until late in the season away at Rotherham. I think he deserved a few more outings.
Andy moved on to Stalybridge and played there for three years mainly in midfield scoring a spectacular goal against Chester in the FA Cup. He then followed manager Phil Wilson around playing for him at Southport and Lancaster City. He was last heard of at Altrincham in 2007.

249 Mark Carter
Position : Forward
Played : 1997-98
Appearances : 11
Goals : 2
Mark was veteran number 2 signed at 36 from Bury on a free. Mark was a very late starter in professional football having been the most feared striker in the Conference during the 80s with Runcorn. He is the record goalscorer for the England semi-pro team with 13 goals in 11 appearances. In 1991 Barnet manager Barry Fry signed him for £40,000 to give the final push to the Conference title and then persuaded him to go full time at the age of 30. He scored 30 goals in 82 appearances then moved to Bury for £6,000 in 1993. In four seasons at Gigg Lane he scored 62 goals in 134 appearances.
For all his pedigree a 36 year old is still a 36 year old and laughably in some of his games Barrow expected him to lead the line on his own. Even my fiance could tell he was struggling. There were occasional glimpses of quality and he bagged a couple of goals but by the end of October he was finished. He went on loan to Gateshead for a couple of months then saw out his contract in the reserves.
He moved on to Ashton United then returned to Runcorn as player-manager in 1999-2000. He was subsequently a scout for Accrington and now works as a press officer for both Merseyside clubs. He still plays for Aintree Valentine Over-40s.

248 Andy Barlow
Position : Left back
Played : 1997-98 to 1998-99
Appearances : 68
Goals : 1
So we progress to Graham Barrow's second season in charge. I still had some optimism going into 1997-98. The last few games of the previous season had been excellent and Barrow had finally been able to release Docherty's dead wood in the summer. Unfortunately that's when he made his biggest error and set the clock ticking on his managerial career. Frustrated by failure to land his main transfer targets - most notably Mansfield's John Doolan who was supposed to come in exchage for Steve Whitehall but Barrow was outwitted by their boss Steve Parkin who ended up with both players - Barrow signed four veterans in their thirties instead and it proved a recipe for failure. By contrast he made , as we shall see, some very significant mid-season signings but it didn't prevent us from finishing three places below the previous year. We won enough home games , some of them very convincingly, to keep out of trouble but the away form was abysmal managing just 10 points on our travels.
The first of those veterans to discuss, 31-year old Andy was signed on a free from Blackpool. He made his name with Oldham where he took over the left back spot from John Ryan in 1984 and was ever-present in 1990-91 when they won promotion to the old First Division. Even before they got there there was speculation whether Andy would be able to handle the move up in class but he played 28 games the following season. In 1992 though Oldham signed Neil Pointon and Andy rarely figured after that. He played 2 games on loan to Bradford in 1994 before being released in the summer of 1995 having made 261 appearances. He went to Blackpool and had two good seasons there making 81 appearances.
Of the four "oldies" Andy was the youngest and still had something to offer. He was excellent at the start of the season looking like the best left back we'd had for years but as the season progressed started looking lethargic and offering "will this do ? " performances. He would jog rather than run on to the end of balls into his channel looking to block the clearance rather than exert himself to get on the end of them. He then gave an interview to a Blackpool paper in which he openly touted the idea of returning there which didn't endear him to fans. When he roused himself he could still be an asset. We played Torquay away in April 1998 and their winger Rodney Jack was looking lively in the first few minutes. Andy put him in his pocket with two firm (perfectly legit) tackles which nullified all Torquay's attacking threat and would have gained us all three points had a gilt-edged chance fallen to anyone other than Dave Bayliss. The following season Andy had to share the left back position with the oft-injured Dean Stokes but in his last game away at Brighton (well at Gillingham actually) following Barrow's sacking he played in midfield and scored the late equaliser with his last touch in professional football.
He retired as a pro to take up a coaching job with the PFA which he still holds althoiugh he had a short spell playing for Ramsbottom United.

247 Glen Robson
Position : Forward
Played : 1996-97 to 1997-98
Appearances : 10
Goals : 0
Glen was a young striker apparently discovered by Docherty's leftover youth coach Jimmy Robson playing in the north east for Murton FC. He joined us in November 1996 and after some good performances in the reserves made his debut as a late substitute at home to Hull in February 1997.
Glen never started a game for us and was usually brought on when we were chasing a game - seven of his 10 games ended in defeat. He looked lightweight and not really up to it ; it was surprising that he was allowed 18 months to try and make his mark.
Glen went back into non-league with Harrogate Town but really came to life with Blyth Spartans where he scored 88 goals in 125 games. That got him a second chance at League football with Darlington in 2003 but he failed to score in 6 appearances and moved on to Durham City. He has since played with various non-league sides in the north east and is currently with Stokesley FC.
Glen concludes the 1996-97 season.
246 Wayne Dowell
Wayne is 6th from the left in the front row
Position : Left back
Played : 1996-97
Appearances : 7
Goals : 0
Wayne was signed on a free from Burnley in the summer but his debut was delayed by injury until December. He had a brief run in the Burnley first team in 1995 but made more appearances on loan at Carlisle the following season.
Wayne came on for the second half in a dismal home defeat by Hartlepool then had a four game run before being subbed at half time down at Brighton. He had 2 more games in February and that was it. I'm stuck for anything else to say about him; he didn't make any glaring errors but didn't do anything to impress either.
He was freed in the summer and went to Doncaster on trial. He played in the opening game of their nightmare 1997-98 season then didn't feature and left at the end of August. He pottered about the non-league scene for a few years with Northwich, Accrington and Barrow.
