212 Darren Ryan
Position : Winger
Played : 1994-95 to 1995-96
Appearances : 32
Goals : 2
Darren was signed on a free from Stockport. He began his career at Shrewsbury making 4 appearances as a teenager before moving to Chester in 1992. He scored twice in 17 appearances before moving to Stockport in 1993. He had an apparently good season for them in 1993-94 scoring 6 in 32 appearances so it should perhaps have rung alarm bells that they didn't want to keep him.
Darren was a lightweight winger who could occasionally make an impact coming off the bench but never looked like he was worth playing for 90 minutes. He did have a run in the side towards the end of his first season when he scored a couple of goals. However there were off-field problems with Darren being persistently late for training and allegedly too fond of the nightlife. He rarely featured in 1995-96 but Docherty dithered until March before firing him off.
He returned to Chester playing 4 games and scoring once (a penalty against us at their place) but they didn't keep him on. He then went into Welsh football first with Barry Town (for whom he scored a shedful) and then a variety of clubs until becoming player-manager of Newtown in 2006. He gave up playing in 2009 and resigned his post earlier this year.
