216 Neil Dunford
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 1994-95
Appearances : 2
Goals : 0
Now we get to the end days of Dave Sutton's reign. Neil was a non-contract player taken on trial from Castleton Gabriels after a pre-season friendly in the summer but he was the only keeper on our books when Chris Clarke was injured in the Auto-Windscreens game at Blackpool. Sutton gave him his chance in the next League game at home to Doncaster and Neil responded with a clean sheet and a penalty save. Unfortunately in the next game at home to Fulham, Neil came out for a cross he'd no hope of getting to and Fulham put the winner into an empty net. That prompted Sutton to go into the loan market with disastrous results but that's for the next post.
Neil got one more chance a month later in the FA Cup tie at Walsall where he put up a brave one man defence (wildly cheered by fans who thought he'd been hard done by) against a first half barrage in a game dominated by anti-Sutton protests. Though we lost 3-0 he was the least to blame. He left the club after that and after a brief spell at Chorley returned to the Rochdale Sunday League where apparently he switched to a striker's role.
