325 Simon Grand

Position : Centre  half

Played : 2002-03  to  2003-04

Appearances :  40

Goals : 2

Simon was a YTS youngster who came into the side following the injury to Shane Candsell-Sherriff, Simpson preferring to go with him rather than recalling Steve Macauley from Macclesfield.

He made his first team debut in the FA Cup tie at Bristol Rovers then kept his place for the 4-0 demolition of leaders Hartlepool, the season’s most astounding result (in the League at least). Thereafter he was first choice partner to Gareth Griffiths and played to the end of the season. He looked quite promising ,calm and composed and not easily intimidated despite his youth. He featured throughout the FA Cup run and was initially credited with the winner at Preston, nudging the ball into the net when keeper Moilanen made a hash of Simpson’s inswinging corner but it was later deemed to have already crossed the line. He later scored legitimate goals at Rushden and Hartlepool.

Lord knows what Simon got up to in the summer of 2003 because when he played the following season he was bewilderingly bad, paceless and panicky. He soon dropped out of the picture and only  featured  in  one  game under Steve Parkin so his release was inevitable.

Simpson snapped him up for Carlisle and he was a regular as they won the Conference title but his chances were limited back in the League as Simpson strengthened the squad and won another promotion. The following season Simon transferred to Grimsby after a loan spell but only made 7 appearances in total and was released in May 2007. He then joined newly-promoted Morecambe for a season but only made 6 appearances and dropped down to Northwich Victoria in May 2008. After two years there he moved on to Fleetwood Town in 2010 but in an unusual move he is currently back in the League on loan at Aldershot Town.
