332 Daryl Burgess
Position : Centre half
Played : 2003-04 to 2004-05
Appearances : 56
Goals : 0
Daryl arrived on a free from Northampton. He spent the lion’s share of his career at West Brom where he made 332 appearances over 12 years, sometimes at right back. In 2001 aged 30 he joined Northampton on a free and spent 2 years there making 61 appearances.
Daryl advertised his services by faxing in his c.v. (though Alan Buckley already knew him from his own managerial stint at the Hawthorns) and apparently listed “pace “ as one of his attributes which could have got him prosecuted for fraud. Daryl was rugged and solid in the air but so frightened of being turned he usually resorted to barging his man in the back. Though he often got away with it he did give away quite a lot of free kicks in dangerous positions. He and Griff never inspired confidence as a partnership.
As a former team-mate Daryl seemed to be the only player who’d come in since his first spell that Steve Parkin really appreciated and Daryl in turn seemed to benefit from the more defensive approach and started looking more solid. He stayed on for 2004-05 but didn't play as often and his release at the end of the season was no surprise.
Daryl signed for just-relegated Kidderminster but spent just one season there before moving on to Nuneaton Borough. After two seasons there he moved to Bromsgrove where he has since become assistant-manager. His last appearance as a player was in April 2008.
