329 Darren Hockenhull

Position : Midfield

Played :  2002-03  (on  loan  from  Blackburn)

Appearances :  7

Goals : 1

Darren arrived along with Michael Taylor and made his League debut for us (having not made an appearance in a previous loan spell at Darlington) in the game against Torquay.

A slender 20-year old , he was initially regarded as the makeweight in the deal but after a quiet start he started to show some promise with strong running and enough skill to beat his man. At one point Simpson actually wanted to sign him up for the following season but there was no director around to sanction the deal. Darren missed a couple of games through injury but came back to score his only league goal in the last home game at Hull which turned out to be the winner.

While the Board deliberated over Simpson’s successor Darren slipped through the net and signed for Halifax. He has never returned to League football which suggests he probably wasn’t as good as I remember him. He had 2 seasons at The Shay mainly playing at right back then moved on to play for Witton Albion, Bradford Park Avenue and currently, Salford City where he usually plays at centre half.
