330 Neil Bennett
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2002-03
Appearances : 1
Goals : 0
Neil was a free agent signed as cover while Neil Edwards struggled with injury. He was originally a trainee at Sheffield Wednesday but dropped down to Ossett Town in 2000.A year later he moved north and made 10 appearances for Airdrie. He then had short spells with Drogheda , Bradford City (no apps) , Barrow and Derry City (including a friendly against Barcelona ) before fetching up at Spotland.
He got his chance after Matt Gilks's collision with the post at York. Neil was not on the bench at the time but played in the following game at home to Kidderminster. He didn't do anything amiss until we conceded the winner in the second half at his near post. At the time I and others thought he was too slow getting down to it but all the contemporary match reports say he was unsighted so perhaps we were being a bit harsh.
Anyhow Neil was released at the end of the season and joined Albion Rovers where he got some regular first team action with 27 appearances. That got him a move to Partick Thistle but he only made one appearance before returning to England with Ossett Town for whom he is still playing.
Neil wraps up the 2002-03 season and therefore the signings of Paul Simpson.
