After a big clear out of Parkin's underachievers Keith Hill needed to bolster his squad so we had four new players going into the game against MK Dons in January. Rory was signed on a free from Blackpool. He had actually been an apprentice with us way back in the Docherty era but few remembered him. He made his League debut with York in 1998 but moved on after only 3 games. After failing to get a game with Oldham he moved into non-league with spells at Northwich, Nuneaton and Bradford Park Avenue and then Accrington where he was a key figure in their climb towards League football scoring 11 goals in 70 appearances. In July 2005 he went to Blackpool for a small fee and played 29 games without finding the net plus half a dozen goalless games at Halifax on loan. He'd last played for Blackpool in October.
Rory is unusual in that he's remembered more for his effect on another player than his own performances. He went straight into the side against MK Dons on the left and scored the third goal, his first in League football at the age of 28. He was a Rick Holden-type of winger with no real pace but he worked hard and could deliver a good cross when he got the room. However his arrival gave Adam Rundle the kick up the seat he needed and his performances coming off the bench were superb. Before long he was getting the nod ahead of Rory who finished the season on loan at Darlington (8 games no goals) as a result.
Rory started the next season in good form coming off the bench in the League Cup against Stoke and crowning a great display with a volleyed equaliser. He also put his penalty away in the shoot-out. He was quite an effective impact sub and got another valuable equaliser away at Darlington in October. Rory appeared fairly regularly up to Christmas but his contract wasn't renewed in January; it's difficult not to feel sorry for a player who hadn't let us down at all.
Rory moved back into non-league football with Farsley Celtic then Eastwood Town , back to Bradford Park Avenue for one game, Goole, Ilkeston Town and Goole again..
