415 Will Buckley
Position : Winger ( also played up front )
Played : 2007-08 to 2009-10
Appearances : 59
Goals : 13
Will is the most exciting homegrown talent in my time watching Rochdale. He made his debut in the 2-4 battering at home to Hereford in February the first of 8 appearances that season ( none of them in victories) . He looked very raw and not quite ready for first team action.
In pre-season for 2008-09 he looked a different player, lightning fast ( I'd put him second only to Andy Milner ) and confident enough to take people on and beat them. He soon edged Kallum Higginbotham out of the first team and weighed in with goals in 3 successive games in September. He finished the season with 10 goals , the most celebrated being the late consolation goal at Bury which turned out to scupper automatic promotion for them.
Will could do a job as a centre forward but his best position was wide on the right where he could terrorise the full back. His best game was at home to Bradford in March 2009 where he ran them ragged and at least three of their guys were booked for trying to impede him. It seemed like the whole team couldn't stop him.
Will got off to a good start in 2009-10 repeating his September goal blast of a year earlier then became hampered by a thigh strain and last appeared for us in November. In January despite the fact that he wasn't fully fit Watford signed him ( for a maximum of £300,000 if sell-on clauses crystallise) and gave him a three and a half year contract.
Will's debut for Watford was delayed by the injury and he played 6 games scoring once. In the season just gone he played 26 games and scored 4 goals. Watford have recently turned down bids of £700,000 for him from Brighton.
