417 Tommy Lee
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Macclesfield )
Appearances : 11
Goals : 0
Tommy was signed following the injury to James Spencer in March, the first of a string of borrowed keepers over recent seasons. The 22 year old began his career with Manchester United but made his League debut on loan at Macclesfield in 2006 and they signed him on a free at the end of the season. He'd had an eventful game in the FA Cup at Chelsea in January 2007 when he'd carried omn after treatment to an arm injury and then been sent off. Tommy made 63 appearances for Macc but lost his place in November and had only appeared once since then.
We had no real right to expect Macclesfield's reserve keeper to be much good but he could do the basics well enough and avoided conspicuous howlers. He was also a nice guy and didn't seem to mind chants of "Gyppo" for his long haired appearance. He had mixed fortunes in the play-offs . He was a hero for saving a poor spot kick from a certain Jason Kennedy against Darlington ( see picture above ) but a bit of a villain at Wembley particularly with the third goal where Liam Dickinson beat him at his near post.
Tommy was released by Macclesfield in the summer but got a one year deal from Chesterfield.. His career was interrupted by a broken jaw sustained in a nightclub attack in September 2008 but since recovering from that has been virtually ever-present and has now racked up 116 appearances for the Spireites.
