413 Rene Howe
Position : Forward
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Peterborough )
Appearances : 20
Goals : 9
Rene was signed in January in a deal to last to the end of the season, a giveaway that Glenn Murray would soon be departing. His career began with his hometown club Bedford Town in 2003 when he was 17. He moved on to Kettering in 2006 and scored a very impressive 25 goals in 40 games. Peterborough signed him for £100,000 in May 2007. He had played 15 games (13 as substitute) scoring just once prior to joining us.
Rene is a difficult player to assess. He was similar to Atieno and Barker in not being able to marshal his raw talent effectively and give consistent performances but unlike them he did get goals including a second half hat-trick against Grimsby in April. Undoubtedly playing in an attacking side helped but he certainly contributed to our dash for the play-offs. The decision to demote him to substitute for the Final at Wembley was very questionable and we missed his height up front.
He returned to Peterborough and they remain his parent club but remarkably his last game for them was before his time with us. He spent the following season on loan at Morecambe making 37 appearances and scoring 10 goals ( including one against us when the defence failed to play to the whistle ) . He began 2009-10 with a six-month loan move to Lincoln but it was cut short by an injury in December. When he recovered he joined Gillingham for the rest of the season scoring twice in 18 games. He began the season just gone with a loan move to Rushden & Diamonds returning to Peterborough in January with hopes of a permanent move. Instead he joined Bristol Rovers scoring once in 12 appearances. His original contract must have run out by now but at the time of writing there is no news on his fate.
