Alan Goodall's replacement was pinched from neighbours Bury, Dave Flitcroft enticing young Tom to sign with us instead. The son of former Bury defender Keith Kennedy ( and therefore nephew of Liverpool's Alan ) Tom made his debut for Bury at 18 in 2003 and went on to make 143 appearances scoring 9 goals.
Tom had it all to prove being a Bury fan and replacing a very popular player but he proved his worth on the pitch. Tom was one of the most consistent players of recent years missing few games through either injury or suspension. He was also very comfortable on the ball and an excellent clean tackler though if we're being picky he did give away one or two penalties through diving in when there wasn't an immediate danger.
Tom also got up and down the pitch very well to link up with whoever was on the wing ahead of him. That was when his main drawback became evident as he was indecisive in the opponents' half often failing to put in an early cross when that was the best option. He was also very wasteful with free kicks scoring two absolute belters at home to Chesterfield in September 2008 and away at Dagenham in January 2009 but putting many more way over the bar. On the other hand he was a good penalty taker the most memorable being the one to make it 3-0 at home to Bury in August 2009 after which he got booked for inciting a one man pitch invasion with his provocative celebration.
Tom made the League Two PFA Team of the Year in 2008-09 and after another good season when we won promotion he moved on to pastures new with Leicester City. However having only made one appearance for them ( plus three in the League Cup ) he returned to us on loan in 2010-11 a rather strange move as we already had two left backs. Nevertheless Tom got the nod and played for us between November and January.
He then finished the season on loan at Peterborough making 14 appearances for them. No doubt we're keeping tabs on the situation.
