427 Frank Fielding
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2008-09 ; 2009-10 ( both on loan from Blackburn )
Appearances : ( first spell ) 25 ; (second spell) 18
Goals : 0
Frank was first signed in January 2009 after an injury to Sam Russell. Frank was 19 and born in Blackburn. He made his League debut on loan at Wycombe in September 2007 and did so well the deal was extended to the end of the season with Frank keeping both their regular keepers out of the side. Before joining us he had a three month loan spell at Northampton.
Frank was a brave and agile keeper most notable for his decisiveness in coming off his line and clearing the ball well outside his area for which he was quickly nicknamed "Psycho". You kept waiting for him to be caught out doing this but it never happened. As happened at Wycombe his deal was extended to the end of the season and we never saw Russell or Spencer again.
The following season he went on loan to Leeds as cover but never had to actually play and he was free to re-join us in February. Amongst some ungrateful fans bemoaning the departure of Tom Heaton his reception was a bit muted but it didn't seem to bother him. Frank did fine in helping us over the line although he didn't make as many forays off his line as before ( perhaps Sam Allardyce had coached it out of him ) . He certainly joined in the promotion celebrations wholeheartedly , whipping his shirt off at the final whistle and doing a lap of the pitch on fans' shoulders.
Frank spent last season shuttling between Blackburn and Derby making the subs' bench at last for the former although he didn't come on. He went to Derby in the autumn and helped them climb to fourth in the table. When he returned in February they were 19th and he helped them gain 8 points from 6 games compared to the 6 from 12 since his departure. A couple of weeks ago he signed a three year deal with Derby. Last season Frank also got a call-up to the full England squad as he was on hand with the under-21s when Ben Foster got injured.
426 Mark Jones
Position : Midfield
Played : 2008-09
Appearances : 9
Goals : 0
Mark was signed after a trial in the summer having left Wrexham following their relegation to the Conference after 5 seasons as a regular. He made 128 appearances scoring 22 goals many of them from a long way out. He also had 2 caps for Wales from 2006.
Mark was a strange signing . It was like we couldn't resist signing another accomplished midfielder even though there was no room for him in the side and yet we had no cover at all at left back. Mark had to wait for his debut until November when he was picked away at League One pacesetters Scunthorpe in the FL Trophy. He looked pretty good with instant control and the ability to slip past his man and set an attack going. On the downside he didn't have much physical presence.
He had to wait until Boxing Day for his League debut at home to Shrewsbury then finally had a run of games in March. Featuring in the heavy defeats at Chesterfield and Bournemouth probably did for his chances of another contract and he was released in May having shown little of what he could do.
He returned to Wrexham the following season but was released again in the summer and now plays for Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League.
425 Jordan Rhodes
Position : Forward
Played : 2008-09 (on loan from Ipswich)
Appearances : 5
Goals : 2
Rochdale - Ipswich connections are rare indeed - Mark Stuart is the only other one who comes to mind - but this 18-year old striker ( the son of former Olham keeper Andy ) arrived for a month in September after Jon Shaw got injured. He had 8 appearances and a goal for Ipswich plus 4 games on loan at Oxford to his credit.
Jordan scored on his debut at Rotherham then another at Accrington a fortnight later. Neither were classics but all chances are missable. His general play wasn't all that impressive but then again he probably wasn't giving us his "A" game.
Brentford got more out of him when he went on loan there in January and he scored 7 goals in 14 appearances. He also got into the League Two PFA Team of The Year. In the summer Jordan signed for Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee and has been in great form for them scoring 35 goals in 82 appearances. He has also played for Scotland under-21s on the very dubious grounds that he went to school in Scotland while his father played for Dunfermline and St Johnstone.
424 Kyle Lambert
Position : Midfield
Played : 2008-09
Appearances : 1
Goals : 0
Kyle was a YTS lad who made a late substitute appearance against Wycombe in September having been promoted to the bench when Clark Keltie pulled up in the warm-up .He was sent out on loan to Bradford Park Avenue shortly afterwards and then released in January,
He moved on to Leigh Genesis but doesn't appear to be with them anymore.
423 Ciaran Toner
Position : Midfield
Played : 2008-09 to 2009-10
Appearances : 50
Goals : 1
Ciaran was signed in the summer on a free from Grimsby. He began his career at Tottenham but made his League debut on loan at Peterborough in 2001. After a further loan spell at Bristol Rovers he was released in 2002 without having appeared for Spurs. He signed for Leyton Orient where he scored twice in 50 games and won a couple of caps for Northern Ireland in 2003. In 2004 he moved to Lincoln and scored twice in 15 games before his infamous training ground fight with Marcus Richardson saw him exiled to Cambridge on loan to the end of the season. He then moved on to Grimsby. He spent 3 seasons at Grimsby and finished joint top scorer with 8 in 2006-07. The following season he struggled with injury and his contract was cancelled by mutual consent having played 94 games and scored 14 goals. Consensus among the Grimsby fans suggested that he was inconsistent but he was often played out of position on the left.
I’d noticed Ciaran playing against us and thought he was a good player so I was quite excited when we signed him. He had to wait a few games for his chance in central midfield but when it came he immediately looked a better partner for Gary Jones than Clark Keltie. Ciaran was a good all-rounder who got up and down the pitch giving the backline some protection as well as making some surging runs from midfield. He was also a much better tackler than Keltie, able to put his foot in without getting booked. His first touch was a bit shaky but he usually got away with it. He only got one goal but it was pretty special, a 40-yarder at Aldershot that won him Rochdale’s Goal of the Season.
For the first half of the 2009-10 season he was struggling with a shin splints injury, then spent a long period on the bench as 4th choice midfielder and we were virtually promoted by the time he got back in the side. Playing in the dismal run of games after promotion didn’t do his chances of a new contract any good and I could tell from his muted participation in the victory parade that he knew his time was up.
Ciaran had a trial at Luton but eventually ended up at Harrogate Town. This was surprising as he was more than good enough for the likes of Accrington or Morecambe but perhaps he has some injury that won’t take full-time training.

422 Jon Shaw
Position : Forward
Played : 2008-09 to 2009-10
Appearances : 7
Goals : 1
Jon was signed in the summer from Halifax for an undisclosed fee. Jon was from Sheffield and made his debut for Wednesday in May 2003. Later that year he went on loan to York but returned and got more games scoring in Wednesday's last two games in 2004. However that November he was allowed to join Burton on a free. He had three seasons there scoring 26 goals in 101 appearances. In 2007 he moved to Halifax and scored 20 goals in 37 appearances to keep them out of the relegation zone but then they went out of business anyway.
Jon made his debut at home to Barnet and scored a superb third goal when he volleyed home a long ball from Sam Russell first time. That was my son's first game at Spotland but he was fast asleep at the time so my celebrations were muted. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for Jon as he got injured while having a difficult time at Bradford in his next game. By the time he recovered Lee Thorpe had established himself as our main centre forward and Jon became the forgotten man of Spotland.
In January he was sent out on loan to Crawley Town for the rest of the season where he scored a respectable 5 goals in 17 appearances despite being stuck out on the wing. He returned in time to make a substitute appearance in the play-off semi-final at Gillingham and there were hopes that he would come good in his second season.
It didn't look too good for him in the pre-season game at Rossendale when he somehow contrived to hit the post with his header when un-marked six yards out though he scored twice later in the game. He came on as sub in the opening game at Port Vale and in the League Cup at Wednesday but those were his last games for us - I missed both as I was walking The Furness Way ( see clarke chroniclers walks for details ) . He was loaned out to Barrow where he scored 5 in 14 appearances despite a jaw injury and Gateshead though he only made one appearance for them.
Jon and the club decided to call it quits in January 2010 and he signed for Mansfield scoring 3 goals in 13 appearances. He was not kept on and moved on to Gateshead where he has found his shooting boots again scoring 17 goals ( including a hat-trick in a 7-2 defeat of Wrexham ) in 37 appearances.
421 Scott Wiseman
Position : Right back ( also played at centre half )
Played : 2008-09 to ?
Appearances : 103 to date
Goals : 1 to date
Scott accompanied Clark Keltie from Darlington. His career began at his hometown club Hull City where he made his debut in 2004 and somewhat fortunately got an England under-20 cap under his club manager Peter Taylor. Despite that he never really established himself in the Hull side and went out on loan at Boston , Rotherham and Darlington signing permanently for the latter in 2007. In fact Scott made less apperances for Darlo as their own player than he did on loan so his release was not surprising.
After a false start playing on the wing in the first half at Grimsby Scott settled to contesting the right back position with Simon Ramsden with occasional outings at centre back. He confronted Keith Hill with an interesting choice , a really pacy raider who could cause havoc going forward but was suspect at the back or someone who was slower but sounder.
By the end of the season he had chosen Simon Ramsden and decided to release Scott perhaps also influenced by a desire to cleanse the squad of the ex-Darlo influence. However Ramsden's departure to Bradford caused a re-think and Scott was offered a new contract instead. He responded with a brilliant season; some would say he was player of the season in our promotion campaign. He was a major threat going forward where opponents still seemed to be surprised that a big guy could move so fast but he had now made good his defensive deficiencies and was now solid there too.
Scott has adapted well to League One and is one of our major assets.
420 Clark Keltie
Position : Midfield
Played : 2008-09 to 2009-10 ( didn't play in latter season )
Appearances : 31
Goals : 1
Now we come to the 2009-09 season. By finishing 6th and not getting through the play-off semi-final against Gillingham it looks like we slipped a notch compared to the previous season but in fact we did pretty well considering the loss of David Perkins, a subdued Chris Dagnall as he recovered from injury, a chronic lack of goals from midfield and the prolonged failure to find an adequate replacement for Glenn Murray. Automatic promotion looked on the cards until a slide in form at the end of the season as Lee Thorpe in particular ran out of steam.
Clark was signed in the summer from Darlington on a free transfer having made 161 appearances since 2001 scoring 9 goals.
Not exactly pin-up material, the Herman Munster-lookalike with the eccentric choice of car was the immediate replacement for Perkins in the middle alongside Gary Jones. He wasn't a bad player but very different in style preferring to sit deep and ping the ball about. Clark looked rather languid and didn't carry the ball forward at all. His only goal was a penalty at Exeter. He was also useless at tackling with a tackle/booking ratio that was even worse than Michael Simpkins.
After the first couple of months he was displaced by the more dynamic Ciaran Toner and had to rely on injuries to Gary Jones to get in the side. Clark's career with us ended abruptly away at Luton when he reacted badly to being substituted at half time. Whatever he said didn't go down well with the management and he was immediately transfer-listed and dropped from the squad altogether.
No other club was interested in taking him off our hands and he ended up on loan at crisis club Chester until they went out of business then switched to Gateshead. He finally agreed a deal to leave the club in January and appeared to be going back to Darlington until a last minute switch to Lincoln instead.
He did well enough in 11 games to get another year's contract but was out for months with a thigh strain last season. He returned to take part in the disastrous end-of-season run that saw Lincoln relegated and has just been released.

419 George Bowyer
Position : Left back
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09 ( didn't appear in latter season )
Appearances : 1
Goals : 0
George's solitary appearance was also in the Shrewsbury game coming on when Marcus Holness got injured in the second half. He looked quite good , composed on the ball and able to find a team-mate. The following season he got nominated as a candidate for Apprentice of the Year (previously won by Joe Thompson) but that didn't prevent him getting released in the summer.
He joined Ramsbottom United where he made a good impression. I saw him in a few games in 2009-10 and he looked quite good although he was outrageously flattened after the ball had gone in one game and the referee did nothing. In summer 2010 he started moving back up the pyramid by signing for Woodley Sports but has since switchd to Bamber Bridge.
George concludes the 2007-08 season.
418 Raphael Evans
Position : Centre half
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09 (didn't appear in latter season)
Appearances : 1
Goals : 0
Raphael was a YTS player who got a first team outing in the final League game of the 2007-08 season against Shrewsbury. He started at left back to give Tom Kennedy a rest before the play-off games then switched to his more accustomed position of centre half when MArcus Holness got injured. He did alright in a game that didn't mean much to either side.
Raphael looked good in pre-season in 2008 and went out on loan first to Bradford Park Avenue and then Leigh Genesis in March 2009. The latter spell came to an abrupt end when he was arrested after a nightclub incident in Manchester which led to a bouncer's death. Originally charged with attempted murder Raphael was one of seven found guilty of violent disorder and got an 18-month jail sentence.
Since his release he has been playing for Northwich Victoria.
417 Tommy Lee
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Macclesfield )
Appearances : 11
Goals : 0
Tommy was signed following the injury to James Spencer in March, the first of a string of borrowed keepers over recent seasons. The 22 year old began his career with Manchester United but made his League debut on loan at Macclesfield in 2006 and they signed him on a free at the end of the season. He'd had an eventful game in the FA Cup at Chelsea in January 2007 when he'd carried omn after treatment to an arm injury and then been sent off. Tommy made 63 appearances for Macc but lost his place in November and had only appeared once since then.
We had no real right to expect Macclesfield's reserve keeper to be much good but he could do the basics well enough and avoided conspicuous howlers. He was also a nice guy and didn't seem to mind chants of "Gyppo" for his long haired appearance. He had mixed fortunes in the play-offs . He was a hero for saving a poor spot kick from a certain Jason Kennedy against Darlington ( see picture above ) but a bit of a villain at Wembley particularly with the third goal where Liam Dickinson beat him at his near post.
Tommy was released by Macclesfield in the summer but got a one year deal from Chesterfield.. His career was interrupted by a broken jaw sustained in a nightclub attack in September 2008 but since recovering from that has been virtually ever-present and has now racked up 116 appearances for the Spireites.
416 Chris Basham
Position : Midfield
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Bolton )
Appearances : 13
Goals : 0
Chris also made his debut as a substitute in the game against Hereford. The 19- year old giant ( again wikipedia's 5' 11 is ludicrous ) was originally a youth player at Newcastle but signed professional for Bolton in 2006. He'd had 3 games on loan at Stafford Rangers before coming to us.
Most of Chris's appearances were as substitute so it was difficult to form an accurate impression of his capabilities. He certainly could put over a good cross and seemed to have a good range of passes. On the down side he was very clumsy in the tackle and picked up a couple of yellow cards for mistimed challenges. He's also remembered for the club's cock-up when negotiating his loan that meant it expired before the play-offs and made him ineligible to appear, a costly error when Perkins was suspended for the Final.
Chris returned to Bolton and broke into the first team the following season. He made 18 appearances in the Premiership over the next two seasons before switching to his hometown club Blackpool for £1 million last summer. He made 2 appearances for them before breaking his leg in a reserve game in November but resumed playing in the reserves before the end of the season.
415 Will Buckley
Position : Winger ( also played up front )
Played : 2007-08 to 2009-10
Appearances : 59
Goals : 13
Will is the most exciting homegrown talent in my time watching Rochdale. He made his debut in the 2-4 battering at home to Hereford in February the first of 8 appearances that season ( none of them in victories) . He looked very raw and not quite ready for first team action.
In pre-season for 2008-09 he looked a different player, lightning fast ( I'd put him second only to Andy Milner ) and confident enough to take people on and beat them. He soon edged Kallum Higginbotham out of the first team and weighed in with goals in 3 successive games in September. He finished the season with 10 goals , the most celebrated being the late consolation goal at Bury which turned out to scupper automatic promotion for them.
Will could do a job as a centre forward but his best position was wide on the right where he could terrorise the full back. His best game was at home to Bradford in March 2009 where he ran them ragged and at least three of their guys were booked for trying to impede him. It seemed like the whole team couldn't stop him.
Will got off to a good start in 2009-10 repeating his September goal blast of a year earlier then became hampered by a thigh strain and last appeared for us in November. In January despite the fact that he wasn't fully fit Watford signed him ( for a maximum of £300,000 if sell-on clauses crystallise) and gave him a three and a half year contract.
Will's debut for Watford was delayed by the injury and he played 6 games scoring once. In the season just gone he played 26 games and scored 4 goals. Watford have recently turned down bids of £700,000 for him from Brighton.
414 Lee Thorpe
Position : Forward
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09
Appearances : 36
Goals : 6
Lee was signed on a free from Brentford as a replacement for Glenn Murray before the transfer deadline closed. The 31-year old was a familiar face around the lower divisions. He made his debut for Blackpool in 1995 but was released after 12 games without scoring. He went to Lincoln and had a good 5 years there scoring 57 goals in 192 appearances. Surprisingly released in 2002 he joined Leyton Orient scoring 12 goals in 55 appearances but it turned sour there and he went on loan to Grimsby in February 2004. He went to Bristol Rovers in March 2005 but scored just 4 in 35 appearances. Just under a year later he went to Swansea and scored 3 in 18 games as Swansea won promotion. The following season he went on loan to Peterborough and Torquay signing permanently for the latter in May 2006. Although he scored 8 in 41 games he sometimes played at centre half at Plainmoor. He left by mutual consent when Torquay were relegated and signed for two years at Brentford. He had played 19 games scoring 4 goals but was out of favour when we came calling.
Lee was a textbook centre forward , good in the air with a decent touch and the ability to play in team-mates. He was also a good defender at corners and set pieces. There wasn't much else to his game as his pace had gone but he was the best option in that position. Lee was in and out of the side in his first season with a set of niggling injuries but he proved his worth with a superb first goal at Brentford (which he rather enjoyed) and then setting up Alfie's winner at home to Bradford three days later. Unfortunately his season ended with an injury in the following game which was then compounded by breaking his arm in an arm-wrestling contest on the coach up to Darlington for the play-off semi-final.
His second season got off to a bad start when he was sent off for a stupid challenge at Rotherham. One of the guys I went to the game with was ranting that he should never play for us again but the fact remained that we needed him and he scored in his next game back , the FLT game against Carlisle. He had his best game away at Notts County in October where he scored both our goals, each an excellent finish with his right foot. Lee disappeared from the side just after Christmas and there were never substantiated rumours that he'd failed a drugs test but he returned to the side in February and played out the rest of the season. However age was catching up with him. He only scored one more goal and was culpable for missing good chances in the draw at Luton which ended our hopes of automatic promotion.
Lee joined Darlington in the summer but struggled with injury only playing 68 games and failing to score. He moved on to Fleetwood in 2010. He played against us in a pre-season friendly but barely touched the ball. He made 19 appearances in the season just gone mainly as substitute but didn't score.

413 Rene Howe
Position : Forward
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Peterborough )
Appearances : 20
Goals : 9
Rene was signed in January in a deal to last to the end of the season, a giveaway that Glenn Murray would soon be departing. His career began with his hometown club Bedford Town in 2003 when he was 17. He moved on to Kettering in 2006 and scored a very impressive 25 goals in 40 games. Peterborough signed him for £100,000 in May 2007. He had played 15 games (13 as substitute) scoring just once prior to joining us.
Rene is a difficult player to assess. He was similar to Atieno and Barker in not being able to marshal his raw talent effectively and give consistent performances but unlike them he did get goals including a second half hat-trick against Grimsby in April. Undoubtedly playing in an attacking side helped but he certainly contributed to our dash for the play-offs. The decision to demote him to substitute for the Final at Wembley was very questionable and we missed his height up front.
He returned to Peterborough and they remain his parent club but remarkably his last game for them was before his time with us. He spent the following season on loan at Morecambe making 37 appearances and scoring 10 goals ( including one against us when the defence failed to play to the whistle ) . He began 2009-10 with a six-month loan move to Lincoln but it was cut short by an injury in December. When he recovered he joined Gillingham for the rest of the season scoring twice in 18 games. He began the season just gone with a loan move to Rushden & Diamonds returning to Peterborough in January with hopes of a permanent move. Instead he joined Bristol Rovers scoring once in 12 appearances. His original contract must have run out by now but at the time of writing there is no news on his fate.
412 Ben Wharton
Position : Forward
Played : 2007-08
Appearances : 1
Goals : 0
Ben became the first new player of my son's lifetime when he came on for a couple of minutes at Accrington so that Kallum Higginbotham could milk some applause. Ben had been scoring freely for the reserves and youth team but that was the only chance he got and he was released in the summer.
Ben flitted around the non-league scene with short stops at Mossley, Northwich and Buxton before settling at Radcliffe Borough.
411 Sam Russell
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09
Appearances : 38
Goals : 0
Sam was signed on non-contract terms in the summer as goalkeeping cover. He was originally on the books of his hometown club Middlesbrough but only saw first team action in loan spells at Gateshead, Darlington and Scunthorpe. In July 2004 he signed for Darlington on a free and was first choice keeper for most of the next three seasons making 107 appearances in total.
Sam got his chance at the end of November against Mansfield at home . He immediately looked a safer pair of hands than Spencer and kept his place until breaking a finger in the spring. He was given a contract to the end of the season and then installed as number one for 2008-09. Despite looking like a giant banana in his all yellow kit Sam was an agile keeper with excellent distribution skills and good command of his box. He did have one major weakness , a tendency to push shots out to opponents' feet which did cost us some goals.
Sam had the misfortune to get injured again in January 2009 and Frank Fielding came in to replace him. He was perhaps surprisingly released in the summer although there may have been more to it than his capability. Rumour had it that the ex-Darlo contingent were acting as a disruptive clique in the dressing room and needed breaking up.
Sam moved on to Wrexham making 18 appearances in 2009-10 then rejoined Darlington in the summer of 2010 .

410 Rob Atkinson
Position : Centre half
Played : 2007-08 (on loan from Barnsley)
Appearances : 2
Goals : 0
Rob was signed in October as cover for our injury crisis in central defence. He had been at Barnsley since 2004 making sporadic appearances in the first team (8 in total) and having loan spells at Scarborough and Halifax.
As things turned out we didn't really need him but he looked alright in his two brief
substitute appearances.
Rob went to Grimsby almost immediately afterwards, the first of three separate loan spells there. He finally signed permanently in January 2009 and has stayed with them following relegation to the Conference. He has also played for the England C team recently.
409 Scott Taylor
Position : Forward
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from MK Dons)
Appearances : 4
Goals : 0
Scott arrived in October following the injury to Chris Dagnall . The 31 year old didn't lack experience. He was picked up from Staines Town by Millwall in 1995 and after 28 games was signed by Bolton for £150,000 in March 1996 despite failing to score. Scott never managed to establish himself at Bolton making just 12 appearances over two and a half years though he managed to score once. He also scored in loan spells at Rotherham and Blackpool. In October 1998 he joined Tranmere for £350,000 and scored 17 goals in 107 appearances as well as plauying in the 2000 League Cup Final. A year later he was released and joined Stockport scoring 4 goals in 27 games before joining Blackpool six months later. There he hit the best goalscoring form of his career with 43 in 116 games. This increased his value to £100,000 when he went to Plymouth in 2004 but it didn't work out there with just 4 goals in 34 games. He went to MK Dons in 2006 but continued to disappoint with 5 goals in 50 games and a blank loan spell at Brentford in 2007.
I don't critcise Keith Hill's team selections - going back to his first month in charge when he offloaded every player I wanted him to - but the decision to give Scott two starts ahead of Adam Le Fondre is one of his strangest. Scott was either totally shot at 31 or he just couldn't be bothered and I'd be surprised if he touched the ball more than two dozen times across his four appearances. He is the worst player of the Hillcroft era and it's no surprise he dropped out of professional football after his month with us.
He played for Grays Athletic and Lewes before returning to his first club Staines Town in July 2009 where he now combines playng with work as an electrician.
408 Marcus Holness
Position : Centre half ( also played at full back )
Played : 2007-08 ( initially on loan from Oldham ) to ?
Appearances : 82 to date
Goals : 1 to date
Marcus was brought in to give us some defensive cover in October. The 18-year old had just returned from a loan spell with Ossett Town having not made a first team appearance for Latics.
Marcus made his debut in the JPT defeat by Bury having a steady game in a lacklustre team performance. Despite an injury crisis for the following Saturday's game at Grimsby, Keith Hill preferred to play Tom Kennedy at centre half and David Perkins at left back and we went in at half time a goal down having been ripped apart at the back. Then Marcus came on for Doolan and instantly turned the game with an ultra-solid display allowing Kennedy and Perkins to resume their normal positions. After that there were no qualms about giving Marcus first team action. His loan was extended by a couple of months and then turned into a permanent deal in January 2008.
Marcus became effectively understudy to Nathan Stanton though he couldn't have been more different, a 6 footer built like a tank with the temperament of Bobby Moore. In 4 seasons with us Marcus's yellow card total is still in single figures even if you include a couple he picked up while on loan at Barrow. He doesn't need to foul opponents; they shy away from him. Although Marcus doesn't look particularly fast you never see him getting caught for pace, a tribute to his positional sense.
Marcus accepted being third choice behind McArdle and Stanton and sometimes played at full back (on both sides) which isn't his best position. He was unlucky to get injured in the first leg of the play-off final at Darlington or he would probably have been our right back at Wembley. He spent three months of 2008-09 playing for one of his predecessors, Dave Bayliss , at Barrow where he made 11 appearances.
The following season he had the unwelcome surprise that newcomer Craig Dawson had leaped over him in the selection stakes but got on with it and by the autumn had actually displaced Stanton before a serious injury kept him out of action between November and April.
I had arguments with my match mates who thought he should be released when we went up so I was pleased when he was retained and delighted when he took his long-delayed opportunity so well in the season just gone. After an unsteady first game against Hartlepool (where those sat around me were just waiting for a calamity) he increased in confidence with every game. He's now started coming up for corners and making the occasional foray up the pitch. His distribution has steadily improved too; a lot of our attacks in the second half of the season started with a pass from Marcus to Chris O' Grady's feet.
Next season will be another challenge for Marcus as he doesn't yet know who his centre half partner will be but I've no doubt whatsoever he'll be up to it.
407 Kallum Higginbotham
Position : Winger (also played upfront)
Played : 2007-08 to 2009-10
Appearances : 69
Goals : 7
Kallum was an 18-year old released fom his YTS contract at Oldham, perhaps signed because he'd scored a hat-trick against us in the Lancashire Youth Cup.
At the time I was a bit critical of Kallum's signing as I thought we had enough short forwards ( whoever's put him down on wikipedia at 5'11 needs their eyes testing ) and needed a big guy instead. However he soon set about proving me wrong. On his second substitute appearance at Shrewsbury he set up Alfie's last minute winner with a cool chip. After a few more impressive turns off the bench he was in the side ahead of a disappointing Ben Muirhead on the right wing making his full debut at home to Stockport in November. As well as displaying pace and skill Kallum also had a secret weapon, a great spring that allowed him to outjump much taller opponents and head the ball on, a tactic we used a lot in the first half of the season.
Kallum soon attracted attention and had a three-year contract shoved under his nose to keep him at Spotland. He has the honour of scoring the first Dale goal of my son's lifetime a superbly well-taken goal after John Doolan put him through away at Accrington in December. After scoring in successive matches in April, Kallum started to look a bit tired and he had an awful game at Wembley coming off at half time after dismally failing to get past his man.
No one was too worried about a teenager burning himself out before the end of his first season but his poor form carried on into the following season and Will Buckley took his place on the right. Amid rumours of off-field misbehaviour Kallum was loaned out to Accrington in October making 5 mainly substitute appearances without scoring. He returned to us in time to come on and score against them in January and John Coleman decided to take another look at him . Second time round he started in 4 of his 7 games but still didn't make much impact and returned to us in March.
In the summer of 2009 he was put on the transfer list but failed to attract any interest. In the first months of the season he was lucky to even make the bench . However an injury to Buckley and his subsequent departure to Watford gave Kallum an opportunity for a comeback and a goal at Dagenham in only his second League game of the season restored a lot of confidence in him. Thereafter he played in most games though still mainly as a substitute. He didn't quite recapture the form of two years earlier but he was looking useful again. He scored a great equaliser at Crewe on Boxing Day then trumped it with a goal from the touchline just in front of the dugouts away at Accrington that was just fantastic (though tainted by a strong claim for handball by Chris Dagnall leading up to it).
It seemed like Kallum had done enough to extend his stay but he was released at the end of his contract , Hilly revealing some of his exasperation by saying Kallum needed to hear the same lessons from a new manager. He signed for Falkirk on a two year deal and made 30 appearances scoring twice in the season just gone.
406 Kelvin Lomax
Position : Right back
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Oldham )
Appearances : 10
Goals : 0
Kelvin was signed in September to cover for the injured Simon Ramsden. Kelvin had come through the ranks at Oldham , making his debut in 2004. In 2006 he was released then reprieved upon a change of manager.
Kelvin made his debut at Barnet and reportedly played very well. Although some fans seemed to like him I wasn’t so keen. His positional play was OK but he seemed allergic to tackling which encouraged opponents to attack him.
He returned to Oldham and got a regular place for a while at left back. However he gradually faded from the first team picture and in the season just gone made a solitary substitute appearance plus 4 on loan at Chesterfield. He was released in January 2011 and joined Shrewsbury. He only played one game and just two days ago they confirmed that he would be leaving the club.

405 Guy Branston
Position : Centre half
Played : 2007-08 ( on loan from Peterborough)
Appearances : 4
Goals : 0
Guy was brought in to help with our centre half injury crisis in August. Guy was a much-travelled player starting out with Leicester and going out on loan in the late nineties to Colchester, Lincoln Plymouth and Rotherham. In 1999 he was sold to Rotherham for £50,000 despite not having played for the first team. He won two successive promotions with Rotherham and scored 13 goals in 99 appearances but fell out of favour as their fortunes declined and went on loan to Wycombe and Peterborough in his final season. In the summer of 2004 he signed for Sheffield Wednesday and played 11 games before returning for another loan spell with the Posh. In February 2005 he joined Oldham and played 45 games scoring 2 goals before finally signing for Peterborough 18 months later. He played regularly in the first half of the 2006-07 season but found games hard to come by after that. His career was littered with red cards leading to constant jokes involving the word "pickle" ( Jeff Stelling is a particular offender ).
Guy looked like a nightclub bouncer and certainly intimidation and winding the opposing fans up were part of his game. Nevertheless he was a solid no frills stopper who did a good job. His debut at Hereford helped us steal our first point of the season despite an awful performance from Spencer in the nets. He then gave a superb demonstration of back-to-the wall defending against Norwich in the League Cup. Unfortunately we saw the bad side of him at home to Macclesfield when he gave away a stupid penalty and then started crunching people whenever he went up for a corner. Keith Hill took him off before the referee did the job for him. He only got an appearance in the JP Trophy after that .
He got another couple of appearances for the Posh before going out on loan to Northampton in December 2007. The following month he was released by Peterborough. He spent a month at Notts County making one appearance before dropping out of the League with Kettering. In July 2009 he joined Burton for their first season in the League but went on loan to Torquay after his second red card of the season. Despite making it three in his last game of the season Torquay signed Guy in the summer and he has just had an excellent season making 45 appearances (2 goals, no red cards) and getting in the League Two PFA Team of the Year.
404 Nathan D'Laryea
Position : Centre half ( also played at right back )
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09 ( didn't appear in latter season )
Appearances : 8
Goals : 0
Nathan was signed in the summer from Manchester City on a free. He had one League appearance on loan at Macclesfield in January 2007 to his credit.
Nathan made his debut as a sub in the first game at Peterborough then was preferred to Lee Crooks for the League Cup game against Stoke. He played well , looking pacy and calm under pressure. Unfortunately he picked up a knock and missed the next game and that was pretty much the story for his whole time with us. Every time he got a chance he'd get injured almost immediately. His last appearance for us was at Wembley in the play-off Final where he played at right back to cover Simon Ramsden's move into midfield. He didn't have a good game and was substituted in the second half. In 2008-09 he was just a waste of a wage.
Nathan was released in May 2009 and went to university to study English Language. He signed for Hyde and made 32 well-regarded appearances before the injury jinx struck again. He now appears to have retired and taken up refereeing in Oldham.

403 Tom Kennedy
Position : Left back
Played : 2007-08 to 2009-10 ; 2010-11 (on loan from Leicester)
Appearances : ( first spell ) 137 ; ( second spell ) 6
Goals : (first spell) 9 (second spell) 0
Alan Goodall's replacement was pinched from neighbours Bury, Dave Flitcroft enticing young Tom to sign with us instead. The son of former Bury defender Keith Kennedy ( and therefore nephew of Liverpool's Alan ) Tom made his debut for Bury at 18 in 2003 and went on to make 143 appearances scoring 9 goals.
Tom had it all to prove being a Bury fan and replacing a very popular player but he proved his worth on the pitch. Tom was one of the most consistent players of recent years missing few games through either injury or suspension. He was also very comfortable on the ball and an excellent clean tackler though if we're being picky he did give away one or two penalties through diving in when there wasn't an immediate danger.
Tom also got up and down the pitch very well to link up with whoever was on the wing ahead of him. That was when his main drawback became evident as he was indecisive in the opponents' half often failing to put in an early cross when that was the best option. He was also very wasteful with free kicks scoring two absolute belters at home to Chesterfield in September 2008 and away at Dagenham in January 2009 but putting many more way over the bar. On the other hand he was a good penalty taker the most memorable being the one to make it 3-0 at home to Bury in August 2009 after which he got booked for inciting a one man pitch invasion with his provocative celebration.
Tom made the League Two PFA Team of the Year in 2008-09 and after another good season when we won promotion he moved on to pastures new with Leicester City. However having only made one appearance for them ( plus three in the League Cup ) he returned to us on loan in 2010-11 a rather strange move as we already had two left backs. Nevertheless Tom got the nod and played for us between November and January.
He then finished the season on loan at Peterborough making 14 appearances for them. No doubt we're keeping tabs on the situation.
402 James Spencer
Position : Goalkeeper
Played : 2007-08 to 2008-09 (only played for Chester in latter season)
Appearances : 20
Goals : 0
At the beginning of 2007-08 we didn’t really know what to expect. The second half of 2006-07 had been fantastic as the players responded to their liberation from crap team-mates and Parkin’s sterile tactics with a goal bonanza but would the effect last over a full season ? Moreover we lost two very good players as Gilks and Goodall decided to move on and replacing them wouldn’t be easy. We needn’t have worried; after a shaky start Hilly got the show on the road and while we didn’t hand out thrashings in the manner of the previous season we got enough results to get into the play-offs and went to Wembley where we were beaten by a better side.
Apart from Neil Bennett’s solitary game for Paul Simpson, James was our first new keeper since 2001 , arriving on a free from Stockport on a two-year deal. He had come up through the ranks making his debut at 16 in 2002 and had been touted for a big money move in the past but was now out of favour.
James was one of the few really poor signings of the Hillcroft era. He was a big guy and capable of pulling off spectacular saves but he never inspired confidence in either the fans or his team-mates. Against Hereford in particular (where we somehow got away with a 1-1 draw) he looked a bag of nerves and that’s the last thing you want in a keeper. When Matt Gilks conceded a goal his fingers were usually pretty close to the ball when it hit the net ; with James he often wasn’t in the field of vision. Our poor start to the season had a lot to do with him and he only kept three clean sheets for us.
Fortunately for us James got injured in November and non-contract signing Sam Russell got in the side and stayed there until he got injured. James came back for 6 games , his last first team appearance being the 4-1 defeat of Accrington in March 2008. He then picked up a hernia injury and we had to go for a loan keeper.
James had to make do with reserve team football in his second year until April 2009 when he went to Chester on an emergency loan playing in their last 5 games of the season.
He was released in May 2009 whereupon he joined his current club Northwich Victoria.
